In the fourth part of this year’s series I will show you how the make the special hook baits which have helped many field testers to catch record fish. One of the special hook baits is the pop-up or floating bait, the other one is the wafter, i.e. the balanced bait - I will show you how to make them. If you have both bait types you can be sure that - with their help - you can fish successfully in any weather and under any extreme circumstances. Let us see how to make these unusual hook baits in a simple way…
First I will show you how to make the wafter bait. For this occasion I have chosen the blood and fish meal flavoured mix called M2.
The reason I have chosen this mix is that my friend András caught his beautiful and perfect 19 kg Common Carp on this bait.
Let’s now see what ingredients we need to make this bait:
1. M2 Quest Base mix (bloody and fishy basic mix)
2. M2 Premium liquid attract (fishy flavour)
3. Attract Natural
4. Omega Red Salmon oil
5. Betain HCl
6. Flavone Savoury
7. Cork Powder
The necessary additives
If you don’t have any basic ingredients at all and you just want to make wafters bait, I recommend you choose this product which is available to anyone in the shops:
M2 Quest Ready-Made Base Mix 1 kg,
The box contains all the necessary ingredients, you just need to buy the Cork Powder to make wafter baits.
Let us see the recipe to make wafter boilies from 400 g base mix:
- 4 eggs
- 400 g M2 Quest Base mix (blood-based and fish meat-based mix)
- 10 g Cork Powder
- 3 ml M2 Premium liquid attract
- 10 ml Attract Natural
- 16 ml Omega Red Salmon Oil
- 4 g (about half tablespoonful) Betain HCl
- 1 g (about half teaspoonful) Flavone Savoury
Now I show you how to make this bait:
Take exactly 400 g base mix…
… then add 10 g ground corkwood
Break the necessary eggs into another empty bowl - 4 eggs in this case
Add the ingredients you find in the recipe to the eggs then add the base mix with the ground corkwood to the mass and mix them
Mix the ingredients until the mass has proper texture...
then leave the mass stand in a plastic bag
As the mass is resting I will make the pop-up or floating bait. I will show you how to make the M1 i.e. spicy pop-up baits which helped Rob Hales catch this record fish:
The 40.80 kg Mirror Carp caught on the Lake Rainbow is a real record catch which is partially thanks to the M1 pop-up bait Rob Hales used!
Now let us see which ingredients you need to make the bait:
1. M1 Quest Base mix (spicy and fish meat basic mix)
2. Pop-up mix (base mix necessary for floating)
3. M1 Premium liquid attract (spicy flavour)
4. Black Pepper oil
These are the necessary ingredients
Let us see the recipe necessary for boilies made from the mixture of 400 g base mix and pop-up mix:
- 4 eggs
- 200 g M1 Quest Base mix (spicy and fish meat base mix)
- 200 g Pop Up mix (base mix necessary for floating)
- 10 ml M1 Premium liquid attract (spicy flavour)
- 25 drops of Black Pepper oil
Now I will show you how to make the pop-up baits:
The first step is to take 200 base mix…
… then to add 200 g pop-up mix which looks bulkier than the basic mix but it should not confuse you. The weight is the same and it is all that matters.
Add the flavour to the 4 broken eggs…
… and the Black Pepper…
…then add the mixture of the pop-up mix and base mix to it slowly …
… mould them for a short time and you will get a mass that is very easy to handle
If you have worked well the hand rolled balls will float in this condition already!
As you leave the pop-up mass to stand, roll the wafter boilies, its mass has rested long enough.
Once the wafter boilies are ready, start rolling the mass of the floating bait into boilies…
The pop-up balls are really special because their appearance is almost perfect!
After the hook baits are ready, you can start cooking them. First cook the wafters…
… then the pop-up balls because the floating boilies must rest for at least 1 hour in “ball form” before you start cooking them
The final result: The pillow-formed wafters, for more information on making and for some more tips watch the short movie of this article…
… and, of course, this movie shows you how to make pop-up baits
I hope that my series on boilie making this year has given you many new ideas, tactics and tips and I am certain that you will be a more successful and more effective angler with their help.
